Chetco Digital Instruments launches HelmSmart™ vessel instrumentation web site offering Cloud-based data access to its line of SeaSmart network adapters. HelmSmart.net provides a collection of dynamic web pages that link with PushSmart™ Cloud Database and messaging services to present virtual dashboards. Vessel data can be viewed in a variety of formats including Map overlays, charts, spreadsheets, instrumentation, and alarm/status messages. High speed cloud servers provide 24/7 search engine access and global distribution for stored data as well as real-time messaging and live monitoring anywhere with internet access.

 

 

HelmSmart Screens

The core of the HelmSmart™ architecture is the cloud-based PushSmart™ Database engine which receives live feeds from SeaSmart adapters, decodes all the parameters into discrete values, and stores them in a redundant data warehouse. Simultaneously, processed data is sent back out using cloud messaging services to millions of client connections. As a result, a single SeaSmart network adapter can broadcast to thousands of data consumers without requiring any additional on-board equipment. Clients can log into the HelmSmart Web site to view live vessel instrumentation while also performing high-speed searches on any vessel network parameter over specified historical intervals. This allows operators to see what a vessel is currently doing while comparing to stored information. For example, current oil pressure readings can be compared against a previous trip for a given engine RPM to determine if a filter needs service.

 

 

HelmSmart™ is designed to simplify access to vessel network data by creating a common format for all sensors like fluid tanks, batteries, bilge levels, engines, weather, compass, sonar and more. Existing networks are supported including Ethernet, CAN Bus (J19), WiFi, NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183. SeaSmart Gateways provide the physical interface from vessel to cloud while HelmSmart™ provides the client visual interface. HelmSmart is compatible with other vendor protocols and equipment including Garmin, Navico (Lowrance/Simrad), Raymarine, Hummingbird, Maretorn, and Actisense. Once data reaches the HelmSmart cloud, it dose not matter where it came from.

All that is required to start using the HelmSmart™ service is a SeaSmart Gateway and internet connection. SeaSmart adapters can access the internet directly via WiFi hotspots, Cellular networks, cable modems, and Ethernet. If no connection is available, SeaSmart will record data to local SD memory which can be later uploaded to the HelmSmart servers using built-in browser interface. The SD memory cards can hold over a years worth of data and can be removed for manual upload. Data can be also uploaded directly from any PC/Laptop with an internet connection and network gateway such as a NMEA 2000 to USB adapter from Chetco Digital or Active Research. SeaGauge products are also available to convert up 16 sensor outputs directly to PushSmart™ Protocol and send directly to HelmSmart servers without requiring a full on-board network.

 

 

HelmSmart.net utilizes widely available browser platforms such as tablets, laptops, net books, and smartphones and supports operating systems including Windows, iOS, Android, Linux, and more. No apps are required for the purely browser based solution assuring true cross-platform compatibility.

 

 

HelmSmart™ can be integrated with Cloud based apps like Google Docs and GeckoBoard to expand its reach. Vessel data logging to SD memory now available for SeaSmart network adapters

Chetco Digital Instruments has introduced a new SeaSmart vessel network adapter featuring data logging directly to SD Memory. SeaSmart SDLTM interfaces directly to vessel data networks and records all parameters to an internal SD memory card which can be removed for upload to the Company’s HelmSmart.netTM Cloud servers. SeaSmart SDLTM is available with network options for Serial (NMEA 0183), USB, or NMEA 2000 and can record over a years worth of information before an upload is required. When connected to an established NMEA 2000 network, SeaSmart SDLTM will record several huSeaSmart SDLndred vessel parameters in adjustable intervals from 1 second to hours.

 

A major benefit of the new SeaSmart SDLTM is seamless integration with Chetco Digital Instruments HelmSmart.netTM Cloud data services. Recorded SD data can be transferred to Cloud Servers using a simple Browser access page where it is then instantly added to the HelmSmart database. Once in the Cloud database, customers can search and view information using a variety of analysis and display tools. Vessel data logging now an option for SeaGauge analog sensor to NMEA 2000 and Ethernet network adapters

Brookings, Oregon February 4, 2014

Chetco Digital Instruments had added SD data logging to their line of vessel analog sensor interface units. SeaGauge™ Remote Sensor units convert existing analog sensors into network protocols including USB, RS232 (NMEA 0183), NMEA 2000, Ethernet, and WiFi for instrumentation display on compatible devices such as Chart Plotters, PCs, tablets, iPads, and SmartPhones. The new SD memory data logging options allows more than a years worth of information from hundreds of sensors to be recorded and uploaded to Cloud servers for analysis and display. SeaGauge™ interfaces directly to vessel data sensors such as temperature, pressure, fluid levels, voltages, and more - up to 28 different inputs. Sensor signals are converted to network protocols like NMEA 2000 and Ethernet for display on compatible Multi-Function Displays heads located through out the vessel. A singe SeaGauge™ Remote Sensor unit can support Dual engines plus a Generator SeaGauge Pro with SD memoryand display on multiple devices using a single network cable. SeaGauge™ has built-in calibrations to support over 300 different sensors which can now be loaded directly using the new SD memory option.

 

 

The data logging feature allows SeaGauge™ Remote Sensor units to record up to 28 separate sensor inputs per second using the company’s PushSmart protocol and later upload to the HelmSmart.net™ Internet site for display as charts, maps, spreadsheets, gauges, and other analytical tools. “You really get the best of both worlds” comments Joe Burke CTO for Chetco Digital. “Live data can be displayed on a MFD like the Lowrance HDS9 and also reviewed on a spreadsheet at a later time” he added. Multiple ports featuring NMEA 2000, Ethernet, or USB interfaces allow connecting both a MFD and PC on the same vessel. “in the past we just viewed data and then threw it away, now we keep it” Burke added when referring the new historical analysis features. A single 4GB SD memory card can hold up 500 million records which is more then 125 records a second for a full year.

 

 

In addition to data logging, the SD memory option now allows SeaGauge™ Remote Sensor units to be field configured without requiring a PC connection. Configuration settings and sensor calibrations can be copied to an SD card and then inserted into the unit for instant updates. This greatly simplifies installation and makes support much easier as configuration files can be downloaded directly from the Company’s Web Site. Installers now access the support library on-line and configure customer’s units without having to worry about drivers, Apps, OS versions, or other PC related issues. When equipped with the Ethernet or WiFi network interface option, a custom user interface complete with gauges, layouts and sensor selection can be completed entirely online without a PC/laptop.

 

 

SeaGauge PRO™ has been upgraded with a new sealed enclosure design and 48 wire cable harness to accept 27 sensor inputs – 3 pulse, 12 analog, and 12 switch/indicator status. Vessel sensors can be attached directly to replace analog gauges or the unit can be configured to run in parallel with existing clusters by using voltage sense mode. High precision calibration tables can be tuned to within 0.5% accuracy across the entire operating range and virtually any new sensor added to the system. SeaGauge™ is designed to retrofit older vessels with outdated or inoperative gauges and convert to new digital formats found in most modern designs. Even if a vessel already has a new electronic engine package installed, there still is a need to add in fluid tanks, battery monitoring, Gen-Sets and other equipment for digital instrumentation.

SeaSmart Analog Gateway

Chetco Digital Instruments introduces its latest addition to the popular SeaSmart.net line of marine adapters with the SeaSmart Analog Gateway. This innovative compact unit connects up to 8 analog senders to marine networks including NMEA 2000, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g). Designed to add digital display support for single or dual engine configurations, the SeaSmart Analog Gateway converts sensor data directly into compatible network protocol for display on modern Chart plotters from Garmin, Ray Marine, or Lowrance, PC/iPad devices, or any internet Web browser device.


The versatile Analog interface design allows the unit to be user configurable and supports any analog sender by using embedded calibration tables. Unique to SeaSmart.net is a proprietary field installable sensor module which contains selected calibrations preprogrammed in non-volatile memory.  iNavX marine chart plotting app for iPad/iPhone now provides native support for wireless NMEA 2000 instrumentation using SeaSmart.net adapters

Wireless interface between the popular iNavX Marine Navigation App for iPad and the NMEA 2000 network is now possible with the enhanced SeaSmart.net WiFi adapter. The new release of the Chetco Digital Instruments marine network interface now includes support for Bidirectional transfer of NMEA 2000 PGNs using the companies open Protocol. SeaSmart.net serves as a gateway between the previously closed architecture of NMEA 2000 and a more easily transported protocol developed by CDI. iNavX joins the growing list of developers to adopt the Open Protocol and add support for NMEA 2000 instrumentation, Navigation, and weather information. "SeaSmart.net now allows iNavx to directly access all NMEA 2000 data on any iPad/iPhone" says Rich Ray of GPSNavX. “We were able to quickly add support for the navigation program by using the Open architecture" he added. SeaSmart.net WiFi acts as a data server for NMEA 2000 information, supporting multiple clients with a single wireless device. Standard TCP and UDP networking protocols allow SeaSmart.net to share data between multiple PCs and handheld devices such as IPads and Smart Phones. Using data delivered by the SeaSmart.net adapters, iNavX now supports display of vessel information such as RPM, Engine Temps, Oil Pressure, Battery status, and much more previously not possible with the aging NMEA 0183 protocol. iNavX can now serve as a central vessel monitoring application for all operations and provide early warning of potential problems.

An additional benefit of the enhanced SeaSmart.net is support for legacy AIS information. A second port on the adapter offers direct connection to NMEA 0813 devices and multiplexes the incoming data over the wireless TCP/UDP port thus allowing iNavX to also display AIS vessel target information on top of nautical charts. This provides vessel operators a path to keep existing equipment while still migrating to the advanced NMEA 2000 network. Because SeaSmart.net supports a full suite of networking protocols, all vessel information including local AIS targets can be relayed up to the internet for remote access/viewing. iNavX running on an iPad/iPhone can view vessel information from thousands of miles away.

SeaSmart.net works by converting the raw NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 data streams into a routable TCP/UDP protocol that can be easily transported over internet equipment. Chetco Digital Instruments has introduced a new line of “Plug-and-Play” wireless browser based adapters which directly interface to NMEA 2000™ and NMEA 0183 compatible networks and provide viewing via common Web Browser enabled devices. SeaSmart.Net™ interface modules consist of a NMEA 2000™to Ethernet/WiFi gateway with full function built in web server. These small self-powered modules allow vessel operators to view live NMEA 2000™, NMEA 0183,  and analog engine information via any onboard PC display, iPad™, iPhone™, Android™, Blackberry™ or other browser compatible devices.

Available in wired Ethernet or wireless 802.11 b/g formats, the adapters can be purchased stand alone or integrated into the SeaGauge™ line of digital gauges and switch units. SeaSmart.Net™ allows digital, analog and switch status data streaming over the NMEA 2000™ bus to be funneled to either a AD HOC or Infrastructure network. All modules have a built in web server with support for CGI and AJAX allowing users to setup a wireless NMEA 2000™network in minutes without special IT expertise. The Open Source HTML based user interface eliminates additional license fees or app downloads while providing a cooperative environment for creating dynamic web pages to view and analyze vessel data.

Just in time for off-season maintenance projects, Chetco Digital Instruments has expanded its line of NMEA 2000 compatible displays with a 5.7” VGA color touch screen display with daylight LED backlight.

SeaGauge G12HD™ features a 640 x 480 resolution and 800 NIT LED backlight suitable for sunlight viewing. The new color touch screen display can access data directly off the NMEA 2000 instrumentation bus or through the company’s SeaGauge Remote Instrumentation Hub.

This instrumentation and display system offers a wide selection of user configurable gauges, switches and indicators. Incorporating vivid high resolution color graphics, the SeaGauge G12HD™ allows users to create and view 16 critical engine instrumentation functions including fluid levels, EGT, boost pressures, oil temperature and pressures, voltages, current, tachometers, and more - warning of harmful operating conditions before engine damage occurs. The program also provides for sensor calibration thereby allowing the system to fit into virtually any application. When combined with the company’s optional NMEA 2000 compatible converter module, the system allows expanded viewing of most NMEA 2000 PGN’s as well as directly connected analog data inputs. “This system allows for a one box solution providing USB, RS232 Serial, and NMEA 2000 interfaces” says Steve James the company President. Optional Bluetooth and Wi-Fi adapters expand the possible connections. “All gauges and switches can be viewed and operated on any PC/ Laptop, SeaGauge™ color display or NMEA 2000 compatible display” he continued. Real-time engine data can be displayed and logged on any PC for easy viewing at a later date using the company’s vDash instrumentation display software.

SeaGauge G12HD™ has multiple data ports that can switch between dual SeaGauge-Remote sensor units to further increase instrumentation to over 32 functions or more on a single display. Optional SeaSwitch™ module provides 12 sealed relays for touch screen switching 15 amp circuits using the same SeaGauge G12HD™ display and all accessible over the NMEA 2000 network if desired.

This large 5.7” color VGA touch panel has room to show all instrumentation required for dual engines on one screen. New High Definition graphics provide a standard instrument panel with a traditional dial theme. Optionally, an “Open Source” Theme library allows users to custom design their own panels. Users can also select from a growing library of display graphics themes available on the company web site. Up to 16 user defined gauge arrangements and 12 switches or indicators can be accessed using touch sensitive commands. Additional gauges and switches can be added through digital expansion ports. All sensor inputs have High-Low alarm settings with a manual override feature.

The Company’s new NMEA 2000 interface adapter allows the SeaGauge G12HD™ to directly display a growing list of PGNs including Engine Data (PGN 127488, 127489) Fluid Levels (PGN 127505), Battery Status (PGN 127508), Switch Status (PGN 127501), Weather Data (PGN 130323, PGN 130311, PGN 130306), Vessel Data (PGN 127250, PGN 127257) and more. The SeaGauge G12HD™ display can also generate NMEA 2000 Switch commands (PGN 127502) to allow remote control of user defined switches via the weather-resistant touch panel.

With concerns over high fuel prices, smart engine monitoring systems are becoming a popular way to increase performance while lower operating costs. The SeaGauge system allows for simple retro-fitting of older diesel engines by replacing inoperative mechanical gauges with digital display panels using existing wires and senders. Migrating to digital instrumentation on older diesel systems can improve reliability while providing digital accuracy. Some mechanical oil pressure gauges for example, still perform measurements by piping oil and hydraulic fluid long distances from the engines to the helm station where breaks and leaks in the line are common. Single mode digital gauges have an electrical sender at the engine to eliminate the fluid run but still need a bundle of wires to the helm. The SeaGauge G12HD™ instrument panel improves on this by installing a 16 function remote sensor interface at the engine which converts all the engine data into a single network CAT5 or NMEA 2000 cable which can be run to multiple display panels up to 300 feet away. The company also offers a wireless NMEA 2000 Bluetooth or Wi-Fi module that can eliminate rewiring completely. This wireless option allows engine data, weather station data, switching status, alarm status or any other data available on the NMEA 2000 network for viewing on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi enabled PC/Laptops.

According to Joe Burke CTO for the company, “This bright (800 NIT) high-resolution color screen not only allows for dual engine instrumentation commonly found in larger vessels, the touch features make a perfect platform for remote switching as well”. By adding a separate 12 function sealed relay module to the remote sensor unit, user defined switches can be monitored and activated using color touch screen buttons. “The VGA display panel allows customers to create a truly virtual dashboard with gauges and switches”, Burke added. He continued “one client with a 110 ft luxury yacht uses a gauge/switch combination to monitor and control 48 different engine parameters, including 12 fuel tanks and views the data on several networked G12HD™ displays as well as the onboard computer system”.

Chetco Digital Instruments, Inc is expanding its line of SeaGauge™ color displays with weatherresist touch screen options. By utilizing a propriety protective lens on top of traditional resistive (pressure) touch surfaces, marine rated performance can be achieved while maintaining the features of pressure sensitive touch screens. The new touch surface options will be available on all SeaGauge™ displays including the newest G32N which features a 12.1” diagonal SVGA color LCD panel with 1100 nit brightness making it suitable for outdoor use.

Marine environments are notoriously harsh on electronics and displays. Salt spray and sunlight require high bright screens that can withstand wash downs and rough use. “We developed a durable lens that withstands the elements yet allows the operator to touch-through to the display surface behind” comments Joe Burke, CTO for the company. “The material provides the advantage of pressure sensitive touch surfaces while being completely sealed from the environment” he added. Other weather-resist technologies such as capacitive sense will not work in wet environments or gloved hand. Traditional resistive touch screen surfaces must be vented and thus will quickly fail when exposed to salt water or humidity. By sealing the touch surface behind a flexible lens, durable operation can be achieved.

According to Steve James President for the company, “We have field tested our new screens in some very harsh environments including dive boats and open cockpits with flawless performance”. Marine engine interface unit provides NMEA 2000 access for older diesel and gasoline models

Brookings, Oregon — February 9, 2010

Marine and boat operators now have the ability to view existing engine information on new generation NMEA 2000 compatible displays. Chetco Digital Instruments has added a NMEA 2000 interface option for its line of SeaGauge™ Remote engine sensor units. SeaGauge Remote™ allows any existing diesel or gasoline engine package to be upgraded to full color digital instrumentation. Based on the NGT-1 NMEA 2000 interface adapter from Active Research, Inc, SeaGauge Remote™ will interface directly with popular Marine Sonar/GPS units from Lowrance, Garmin, Raymaine, and others to provide full color display of standard engine gauges along with other equipment monitoring functions.

SeaGauge™ is a stand alone sensor unit that connects directly to engine senders and provides digital instrumentation for up to three engines in one unit. Functions include tachometers, fuel flow, temperatures, boost pressures, oil pressure, exhaust gas temperatures, charging voltage, amps, fuel levels, trim, and much more. SeaGauge™ converts up to 16 analog signals into a single digital NMEA 0183 format for broadcast to remote displays or PC over serial or USB interfaces. Built-in user defined sensor calibrations allow the unit to be used with a wide variety of existing engine combinations. In cooperation with Active Research, Inc, Chetco Digital has added the capability to bridge digital data into the NMEA 2000 protocol using the NGT-1 gateway device.

"Adding the NGT-1 option to the SeaGauge Remote™ unit provides a very cost effective solution for converting existing engine packages to full color digital instrumentation" said Joe Burke, CTO for Chetco Digital. "Other modular NMEA 2000 instrument options only provide a few functions with multiple devices required to form a complete system" he added. Each module requires separate network connection which adds up at $50 per node. The SeaGauge Remote™ unit can provide the basic set of dual engine gauges in one unit, saving hundreds of dollars.

With many manufactures now offering limited digital gauge options on newer GPS/Sonar units – SeaGauge™ Remote will provide the interface between raw engine parameters and the NMEA 2000 protocol. "Our SeaGauge™ systems have supported NMEA 0183 for years" said Burke, when referring to the older protocol. "Adding the NGT-1 now allows the same engine data onto the NMEA 2000 bus so other units can share and display the information". One example for such a system includes the HDS sonar/GPS units from Lowrance. The digital gauge screen on the Lowrance HDS allows users to select from engine tachometers, fuel levels, temperatures, and other performance parameters supplied by the SeaGauge™ Remote unit.

As a further benefit, the Actisense NGT-1 gateway will allow Chetco Digital's line of SeaGauge™ color displays to also operate on the NMEA 2000 bus. The color graphics options and instant-on features make the SeaGauge G12C™ and SeaGauge G24N™ much better suited for dedicated instrumentation when compared to the GPS/SONAR units. One SeaGauge Remote™ unit can drive many different displays when attached to the NMEA 2000 bus. This would a allow for a large SeaGauge G24N™ color touch panel at the main helm station and a second GPS/Sonar unit up on the flying bridge to all display the same engine data.

The large 8.4" color touch panel option has room to show all instrumentation required for dual engines on one screen. SeaGauge™ gives users the ability to migrate to full color digital displays in existing power plants while keeping the same OEM senders. Integrated functions also allow users to increase instrumentation by including fuel flow data in the same compact unit. Up to 10 user defined gauge arrangements can be designed with supplied PC software and downloaded to the unit for real-time display. Individual High/Low alarms can be programmed for each gauge with both audio and visual indicators. The unit even allows customers to add remote switching of up to 12 circuits with the company's SeaSwitch™ relay module thus allowing alarm conditions to shutdown equipment.
